little failure

Little Failure by Gary Shteyngart was not one of my favorite books that I had to read in my lifetime. However I thought the author was very weird in some parts of the memoir. I was very confused when the author kept on mentioning his lover/girlfriend in the text. I was very confused because he didn't give his girlfriend a name. I mean if you say you loved somebody wouldn't you think he would name her? Another thing that confused me is that this story is supposed to be a memoir. So the readers are supposed to believe everything the author is saying. However in the middle of the story he mentions how he lied to us about everything we just read. So I was very confused with this author and thats why I wasn't such a big fan of his work.

On September 11th we had to read a few pages from bell hooks - Remember Raptured. As we were discussing the story and talking about how the authors story wasn't published by a company because she was black. Then someone asked when was this story published. I was shocked when we found out that the book was published in 1999. I was so upset to see racism up front like that in our day and age. When I read the chapter I thought that it was published in the early to mid 1900s. Even today there is still racism out there and thats a major problem. There are still those crazy people out there that are racist. However this form of racism happening so close to my life time just blew my mind because i would never think something like that would ever happen in my life time. Racism is a horrible thing and it must be stopped completely.
